Cohort analysis
Tracking groups of customers by when they joined.
Definition
Cohort analysis groups customers by acquisition period and follows each group's behaviour over time — retention, spend, margin — rather than blending all customers into one average.
Why it matters
Averages conceal direction. A business can show flat overall retention while every recent cohort performs worse than the last.
