Churn rate

The rate at which customers or revenue is lost.

Definition

Churn rate is the percentage of customers, or of recurring revenue, lost in a period. Revenue churn can be negative when expansion from remaining customers exceeds losses.

Why it matters

Churn compounds. A five percent monthly churn rate means losing almost half the customer base within a year, which no acquisition budget comfortably outruns.
