Break-even point
The level of activity where profit equals zero.
Definition
The break-even point is the revenue or unit volume at which total contribution exactly covers fixed costs. Below it the business loses money; above it, each additional unit adds profit.
Why it matters
It reframes planning from 'grow revenue' to a specific, testable target. It also shows how sensitive the business is to fixed cost increases.
