Contribution margin
Revenue minus all variable costs for a unit or segment.
Definition
Contribution margin measures how much each additional sale contributes toward fixed costs and profit, after subtracting every cost that varies with that sale.
Why it matters
It determines whether growth helps or hurts. Selling more of a negative contribution margin product accelerates losses no matter how good the top-line chart looks.
