Fixed costs
Costs that do not vary with activity in the short term.
Definition
Fixed costs — rent, salaried headcount, software licences — remain broadly constant regardless of output, in contrast to variable costs that scale with volume.
Why it matters
The ratio of fixed to variable cost determines operating leverage. High fixed cost businesses earn more from growth and suffer far more from decline.
