Variance analysis

Explaining the difference between plan and actual.

Definition

Variance analysis compares actual results against budget or prior period and decomposes the difference into contributing causes such as volume, price, mix and timing.

Why it matters

The size of a variance is far less useful than its cause. Volume-driven variance and timing-driven variance call for entirely different responses.
