Audit trail
A chronological record of who changed what and when.
Definition
An audit trail is an immutable log of actions taken against financial records, capturing actor, action, target record and timestamp.
Why it matters
Without it, no financial figure can be defended after the fact. Auditors, lenders and acquirers all require evidence that records have not been quietly altered.
