Accrual accounting
Recording revenue and costs when earned or incurred.
Definition
Accrual accounting recognises revenue when it is earned and expenses when they are incurred, regardless of when cash moves. Cash accounting records only actual payments.
Why it matters
Accrual figures show economic performance; cash figures show survival. Reading only one of them produces a systematically distorted picture.
