Double-entry accounting explained with practical examples
Understand debits, credits and the accounting equation through common sales, expense, asset and loan transactions.
Why every transaction has two sides
Double-entry accounting records equal debit and credit effects for every transaction. This preserves the accounting equation and makes it possible to produce a connected profit and loss statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement.
Assets = Liabilities + Equity
Debits and credits without memorizing jargon
A debit increases assets and expenses and decreases liabilities, equity and revenue. A credit generally does the reverse. Debit does not mean bad and credit does not mean good; they describe the side of an account affected.
Practical entries
Customer pays immediately for a service
Debit cash and credit revenue. Cash increases and the sale increases profit and equity.
Business receives a supplier bill
Debit the relevant expense or asset and credit accounts payable. The cost is recognized before payment under accrual accounting.
Business pays the supplier
Debit accounts payable and credit cash. The payment settles the liability; it does not create a second expense.
Business receives a loan
Debit cash and credit loan payable. Cash rises, but borrowing is not revenue. Later repayments are divided between principal and interest.
From bank transaction to accounting entry
A bank line alone may not reveal the complete entry. A loan receipt, customer deposit and owner contribution all increase cash but have different counterpart accounts. Good normalization combines description, source documents, prior treatment and reviewer judgment.
NanoFora proposes double-entry normalization while keeping confidence, source currency and approval history visible. Learn how this supports AI accounting without turning the ledger into a black box.
