CRA My Account and My Business Account: what each portal is for
A plain guide to the Canada Revenue Agency online portals, what personal and business accounts cover, and the records to keep ready.
Two different Canada Revenue Agency portals
The Canada Revenue Agency provides separate online services for individuals and businesses. CRA My Account is the personal portal, used for individual tax matters such as returns, notices, benefits and personal correspondence. CRA My Business Account is the business portal, used for programme accounts such as GST/HST, payroll deductions and corporation income tax. Representatives normally use the separate Represent a Client service.
Access methods, registration steps and available services change over time. Always start from the official Canada.ca website and follow the current instructions there rather than a third-party link.
What businesses usually manage online
- Viewing programme account balances and filing history.
- Filing or amending returns for the relevant programme accounts.
- Making or scheduling payments and reviewing instalment requirements.
- Reading notices and correspondence issued by the agency.
- Authorizing a representative such as an accountant or bookkeeper.
Records that make filings straightforward
- Reconciled bank and card statements for the whole period.
- Sales records with tax treatment applied consistently.
- Purchase invoices supporting input tax credits.
- Payroll registers agreeing to the general ledger.
- A trial balance that ties to the accounts you file from.
- Documentation for any unusual or one-off transaction.
Security basics
Use multi-factor authentication, keep contact details current so alerts reach you, review the sign-in history periodically and never share credentials with a service provider. Authorize a representative through the official authorization process instead.
Practical note
This article is general information, not tax advice. Canadian filing obligations, deadlines and thresholds depend on your circumstances, so confirm them with the Canada Revenue Agency or a Canadian accountant.
