CPA vs chartered accountant: qualifications, scope and choosing one

How CPA, ACA, ACCA and CIMA qualifications differ, what an accountant can do for your business and how to choose the right adviser.

The main professional routes

Accountancy qualifications differ by country, but the intent is similar: examined technical knowledge, supervised practical experience and continuing professional development under a code of ethics.

  • CPA: Certified Public Accountant, the licensed designation used in the United States and, with local rules, several other countries.
  • ACA: awarded through ICAEW in England and Wales; holders are commonly called chartered accountants.
  • ACCA: a globally portable chartered certified accountancy qualification.
  • CIMA and CMA: focused on management accounting and business performance.
  • CA designations in Canada, Australia, India, South Africa and elsewhere follow their own institutes.

What the letters actually signal

A licensed or chartered accountant is bound by professional standards, ethical requirements and often practising certificate and insurance rules. In many jurisdictions only a licensed professional may sign a statutory audit report or represent a taxpayer in specific proceedings. Confirm current scope with the relevant institute or regulator, since rules change.

What a business typically needs

  1. Bookkeeping and month-end close: a qualified bookkeeper or accounting technician is often sufficient.
  2. Statutory accounts and tax filings: an accountant qualified in your jurisdiction.
  3. Audit or assurance: a registered audit firm.
  4. Pricing, planning and forecasting: management accounting experience matters more than the specific letters.
  5. Complex transactions, group structures or cross-border tax: specialist advice.

Questions before you engage

  • Which institute or regulator issues the qualification, and is it currently in good standing?
  • Do you routinely serve businesses of our size, sector and jurisdiction?
  • What is included, what is billed separately, and what turnaround should we expect?
  • Which records must we maintain, and in what format?
  • Who reviews the work before it is filed?

Working well with your accountant

The cost of professional advice falls when the underlying records are clean. Reconciled accounts, attached documents, explained variances and a locked prior period reduce query cycles considerably. NanoFora keeps that evidence trail in one place; see AI accounting for how the review workflow operates.
